Jumbo Perch Fishing With Dropshot Rigs and Jigs

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Fishing for jumbo perch on Lake Simcoe is a dream come true for many anglers. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, you will find plenty of opportunities to hook big perch in Simcoe. With its bountiful environment and various techniques, anyone can catch jumbo perch successfully.

One of the most effective methods to catch jumbo perch on Lake Simcoe is to use drop shots and jigs. Drop shots are efficient lures that allow the angler to get presentations right in front of the perch’s face, creating a higher chance of hooking a fish. Jigs, on the other hand, are a great choice for getting down deep into the water and moving it around faster and more actively, allowing the bait to look more life-like and tantalizing.

When fishing for jumbo perch in Lake Simcoe with drop shots and jigs, the ideal spot usually lies in the 6-12 foot range. You want to find areas with structure such as rocks, weeds, or logs, including areas where baitfish or crayfish might hang. You also want to spend some time in deepwater off dropoffs or other features that attract bigger perch.

In terms of baits, small plastics are great on drop shots, while small grubs, Razor worms, and swimbaits work well on jigs. Both forms of rigs should be matched with light line and a strong rod, as you’ll be facing some large and powerful perch. Additionally, setting your drag correctly to ensure the hook’s penetration is very important.

When it comes to jumbo perch fishing on Lake Simcoe, drop shots and jigs are an ideal option. With a mixture of patience and a baiting technique, you’ll have a great chance of hooking some of these awesome fighters. So there you have it, with this advice, you’re now ready to get out on the lake, let your line down, and get ready to hook some jumbo perch!

What is the best lure to use for perch?

Most of the best perch jigs are 1 to 2 inches in length but sometimes I prefer 3-4 swimbaits for bigger bites. Soft plastic jigs are effective, versatile and inexpensive, with some of the more popular styles being Goby style baits, swimbaits,

Small hair jigs and marabou jigs (i.e. “crappie jigs”) are also excellent choices.

Drop Shotting For Jumbo Perch

How far should the weight be from the hook on a drop shot? Depending on the depth, the distance from the hook to the weight needs to be adjusted. In general I like a lead length of 5 inches or less.

How do you fish soft plastic for perch? Fish them with a jigging motion or swim them slowly and you can do well with perch. I usually cast and retrieve swim baits slowly skimming bottom now and then. I also like stop and go retrieve on bottom with variations of pauses.
